Summary:
When I picked this book up, I couldn’t set it down! Harry Potter has lived his whole life in his Uncle Dursley’s home and has been treated terribly. All of that changes when he discovers he is a wizard and receives a letter from Hogwarts. In this exciting adventure, Harry Potter meets new friends, faces new challenges, and makes new enemies. In his quest to find the Sorcerer’s Stone, he must face Lord Voldemort. Will he be able to defeat him?
Positive Messages:
Harry has several good, loyal friends. The unconditional love of his mother is described to him, and the Weasley family takes him on as sort of an adopted family member.
Language:
D*** (said by uncle)
Idiot, stupid and dumb (said by several people)
Violence & Scariness:
The death of Harry’s parents is not described in detail. The resident director’s in Hogwarts are ghosts. An evil professor tries to knock Harry to his death during a Quidditch match. The same professor kills a Unicorn to drink the life-giving blood of an innocent animal. The battle with Voldemort is intense, and Voldemort yells “kill him, kill him!”
Parents Should Know:
Harry’s childhood is a sad situation before he goes to Hogwarts. At Hogwarts, Harry and Ron often break the rules, but they are punished fairly. Hagrid, the school’s caretaker, drinks frequently.
Obviously, the central story line in this series is wizardry and witchcraft. This is presented in stereotypical way, and references to the “dark side” and “dark magic” are not presented as appealing.
Mom Says:
This is not my favorite type of storyline; however, I think as long as your child understands this is just a story, it is okay. It is a well-written book that is hard to put down once you get into it.
