Summary:
Sophie’s scared but determined. She can’t trust anybody anymore and something big is happening. She can feel it and she is ready to fight back. Her talents are getting stronger and she is determined to find her kidnappers before they come after her again. The Black Swan group is ignoring her calls for help, and Sophie makes a big mistake that leaves her world on the edge of war. Many people think she has finally gone too far. The deeper Sophie searches, the farther the conspiracy continues on, showing that her most dangerous enemy might be closer than she realizes. Can Sophie find the truth before everything around her is destroyed?
Positive Messages:
Loyalty, courage, and friendship continue to be strong themes in book 3. Sophie and her friends have misunderstandings, but they stick together. There are messages about thinking for yourself and asking questions when answers don’t make sense, along with using extraordinary powers wisely.
Language:
Jerk, loser; continued use of humor referencing poop, butts, farts etc. Yeti pee is an ingredient in some of the potions.
Violence & Scariness:
A lot of the violence in book 3 is mental, involving mind manipulation. Some characters die, including a kind adult when an experiment goes bad. The forces of evil continue to operate in this book. Fintan summons everblaze and starts a fire that kills Kendric and destroys the prison and part of a city. The dwarves attack the Neverseen. Sophie is restrained and has a device forced onto her head that causes her a lot of pain. Grady and Brant fight, and Grady wants to kill Brant but Sophie stops him. The Neverseen attack Sophie and her friends at Mount Everest. Some dwarves die and Sandor falls off a cliff and is injured.
Parents Should Know:
The main characters in book 3 are about 13 years old. There are three boys that all like Sophie but there is no kissing or inappropriate scenes. Sophie thinks Fitz is cute and blushes when she thinks about him. Keefe flirts with Sophie. The marriage customs of the elves have them playing matchmaker and making lists of potential marriage partners for each young person and there is pressure to marry someone that is “suitable.” Brant writes Jolie several love letters. Characters get doses of elf medicines and Sophie takes sedatives during a traumatic time.
Mom Says:
As mentioned in other reviews, the language in this book is clean, and while there is “evil” within the book, it isn’t too graphic. I think this series is suited to a more mature reader as it continues on and kept the age range at 11+ for this one. This will keep tween girls that are interested in fantasy series very engaged as it is fast moving.
