Dinosaurs Before Dark

Magic Tree House #1

Mary Pope Osborne

A nervous boy is riding a tetradactyl while a girl is running to chase after him.

Aubrey’s Rating:

Minimum Recommended Age:

Jack and Annie find a mysterious tree house in the woods near their home in Frog Creek. They go up into the tree house to explore and find it filled with books. Jack picks up a book about dinosaurs and says he wishes he could see one, and all of a sudden the tree house starts to spin, and it stops in prehistoric times. Jack takes notes in his notebook and finds a medallion with the letter M. After their adventure, the kids run back to the tree house. How will they get back to Frog Creek now?

Positive Messages:

The siblings band together to work through their challenges on their adventures and demonstrate good teamwork. Never give up is also a common theme throughout the series as the characters try to figure out some tough challenges.

Violence & Scariness:

Parents Should Know:

Obviously, the tree house is magical, so there are instances of the characters believing in magic throughout the series. I personally did not have an issue with how this was portrayed in general.

Mom Says:

I loved this series! I would say you could read this up until age 9, and then your child may start to outgrow it. We read these books every single night until we had read the entire series. The characters mostly go back in time, although there are a few futuristic adventures, and it really sparked an interest in history for both Autumn and Aubrey.
